Capital Art Collective Invites Residents to a “Paint & Sip” Afternoon

Residents looking for a slower pace this weekend may wish to leave their phones at home and pick up a paintbrush instead.

The recently opened Boralani Arts Collective in the capital will host a community “Paint & Sip” afternoon on Saturday, offering islanders a chance to relax, socialize, and explore their creative side.

The event will combine a guided painting session with refreshments and harbor views, creating a setting that organizers hope will encourage both artistic expression and conversation.

Participants will be guided step-by-step through a painting inspired by local island scenes, including fishing canoes, tropical shorelines, and the famous evening sunsets that draw visitors to the waterfront each year.

Organizers say the event is designed for everyone, from experienced artists to those who have not picked up a paintbrush since school.

“We want people to have fun rather than worry about creating a masterpiece,” one organizer explained. “The goal is to spend a few hours doing something creative and enjoying the company of others.”

All painting materials will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their favorite snacks. Local musicians are also expected to provide light acoustic entertainment during the afternoon.

Non-alcoholic drinks will be served such as Niu Fizz – a sparkling young coconut drink with lime, Tava Brew – a chilled herbal island tea, Lagoon Cooler – passionfruit, guava, and citrus, Kavafruit Punch – a non-kava fruit beverage usually served at festivals, and Harbor Tea – iced local tea served throughout the islands.

The event reflects a growing interest in arts and cultural activities across Boralani. While the island is often associated with fishing, agriculture, tourism, and maritime traditions, community leaders have increasingly emphasized the importance of supporting local artists, craftspeople, musicians, and storytellers.

In a small nation, culture is more than entertainment. It is part of how a community remembers its history and expresses its identity.

The Boralani Arts Collective hopes to host similar workshops throughout the year, including wood carving demonstrations, traditional weaving classes, canoe-painting projects, and exhibitions featuring local artists.

As one resident recently observed while admiring a display of harbor paintings, “Not everyone can paddle a canoe or catch a tuna. But everyone can make something.”
