About the Author

Tavakē Ariki is a retired broadcaster, writer, and proprietor of the Koromā Bar & Grill overlooking Nalikai Harbour.

Born on Boralani in 1952, he left the island as a young man and spent much of the 1970s and 1980s studying and working abroad. During twenty years with the United Nations, he lived and traveled throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Pacific, witnessing a period of rapid change as newly independent nations sought their place in the world.

After returning home, he worked in broadcasting and public communications before retiring. Today he divides his time between the Koromā Bar, community activities, and writing occasional essays on island life, Pacific affairs, and the future of small nations.

He remains convinced that the ocean is both Boralani’s greatest challenge and its greatest opportunity.
