The South Pacific: The World’s Largest Forgotten Corner

To someone arriving from North America or Europe, the South Pacific appears to be the far edge of the world. The flight is long. The ocean seems endless. Looking at a globe, one sees an enormous expanse of blue water interrupted only occasionally by small dots of land.

From a distance, it appears empty.

Yet this impression is one of the great misunderstandings of modern geography.

The South Pacific is not empty. It is simply overlooked.
